The Oakirdge Community Association Before and After School Care Program

The Oakridge Community Centre is home to our Before and After School Care (BASC) program—reliable care that supports families through the school-week routine. With a welcoming environment we help children start and end each day feeling safe, connected, and supported.

Program Overview

The Oakridge Community Association’s Before and After School Care (BASC) program provides reliable, welcoming childcare that supports families through the school-week routine. Children in BASC begin and end each school day in a safe, structured environment where they can connect with friends, build skills, and settle into consistent routines.

Eligibility note: Care is available only for children who are enrolled at Lois Riel School.

Belonging icon

Belonging

Belonging is the foundation of BASC. We want every child to feel known, welcomed, and included from the moment they arrive. Consistent routines and clear expectations help children settle quickly and feel confident in the space.

Children build friendships through shared games and group activities, and staff support respectful communication and positive peer interactions. We also recognize that every child brings different strengths, cultures, and needs. Our goal is an environment where differences are respected, and each child feels they have a place here.

For parents, this pillar means peace of mind: your child is not just supervised they’re genuinely welcomed into a caring community.

Mastery Icon

Mastery

Mastery is about helping children build confidence by learning, practicing, and improving. BASC isn’t more school, but it is a place where children can explore interests, try new things, and feel proud of what they accomplish.

Activities may include hands-on projects, creative work, games, and challenges that encourage problem-solving and perseverance. We aim to offer a mix of options so children can choose what fits their interests and energy level.

Mastery also includes social skills, taking turns, negotiating rules, handling disappointment, and celebrating others. For parents, the mastery pillar means your child’s time in care is purposeful, confidence-building, and engaging.

Independence Icon

Independence

Independence focuses on helping children build self-direction and responsibility with age-appropriate support. In a before and after school setting, children benefit from having choices, practicing routines, and learning to manage parts of their day.

At BASC, independence can look like children learning arrival and departure routines, caring for their belongings, and choosing activities. We encourage self-advocacy, asking for help when needed, communicating respectfully, and navigating peer interactions.

We also support decompression after school with a balance of quieter options (reading, drawing) and active play. For parents, this pillar means your child is developing practical life skills and confidence, with caring guidance along the way.

Generosity Icon

Generosity

Generosity helps children see themselves as capable contributors to their community. In our program, we encourage kindness, cooperation, and respecting values that create a positive group culture.

Generosity shows up in everyday moments: welcoming others, including a peer in a game, helping with cleanup, and showing patience when someone is having a hard day. Staff model and reinforce these behaviours, helping children build empathy and understand the impact they have on others.

We also look for age-appropriate ways for children to participate in community projects and collaborative initiatives. For parents, the generosity pillar means BASC supports character development alongside childcare, helping keep the environment welcoming, safe, and positive for everyone.

Fees are due on the first day of each month. Parents will receive their invoice electronically five (5) days before the beginning of the month, with payment expected by the first.

We accept payment by e-transfer, post-dated cheques (provided for the full program year), or credit card (processing fees apply). As part of the registration package, parents will provide the details of their chosen payment method.

Where applicable, government funding is subject to change. If funding is reduced or no longer available, we will notify parents as soon as possible; however, families remain responsible for covering any additional costs if government funding is no longer accessible.

Payment for the final month of care is due by August 1 and is accepted by e-transfer, cheque, or credit card (processing fees apply).  These funds are kept as a credit on your account and used as payment for June’s childcare fees or the final 30 days of care if your child is withdrawn from the program early.
